Thoughts on Video Games Live (Twitch live stream)Posted: May 2, 2012
Back on Saturday April 14, 2012 Video Games Live held a concert in El Dorado Arkansas. The VG songs were performed by the South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and the VGL crew. Much to my surprise, The fine folks at VGL decided to setup a Live stream of the performance. And since my plans that night fell through. I decided to stay home and watch this. I believe that this was their 1st test run of a live stream of an entire concert experience. Definitely the first time I have ever heard of the Twitch.TV service. Before the concert started, Tommy Tallarico and co. talked with the live stream viewers about future tour cities, songs that they are trying to add to their setlists and things of that nature. There was also a quick onstage cosplay (costume play) contest, where people in the audience come to the show dressed as their favorite video game character and one lucky person gets chosen as the winner via audience reaction.
- Arcade Medley
- Mega Man/Rockman
- God of War
- Metal Gear Solid
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Legend of Zelda
- Kingodm Hearts
- Super Mario
- World of Warcraft
- Guitar Hero ( The Pretenders by the Foo Fighters)
- Street Fighter II
- One Winged Angel -Final Fantasy VII
- Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross
- Still Alive – Portal
The South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Laura “Flute Link” Intravia and Tommy Tallarico played really well, the entire night.
The Stream’s audio quality was fine, but the audio and video were out of sync for me the entire concert. The audio issues a few times as well.
- Megaman/Rockman Medley
- Sonic The Hedgehog
- Chrono Trigger/Chrono Chross
Live stream viewers were also not allowed to see the game footage playing (on screen) during the Legend of Zelda and Super Mario segments at Nintendo’s request.
Note the video quality options: 360p, which is how I watched the entire concert and then 432p as a higher quality option. After the concert, was the usual meet and greet/signing session. That was also streamed on their Twich.tv page. They tried to have someone, Mr. Tallarico or some other VGL team member always at the backstage streaming station, interacting with the live stream viewers/chatroom.
The entire concert was just over 700 MB down stream at the 360p quality setting. I hope they do this again sometime. Perhaps work out the A/V sync issues and add more quality options too.
